The strong back doesn't really need to be straight.
Only the forms above the strongback.

Most everything will sag somewhat.
My strong back is 12x12 plywood, the problem is that I don't have anything straight to build it on. It has a distinct twist. Still works.

Yes the laser is more expensive. So far I've divided the cost by 6 boats, so it is getting cheaper.
The string was used once per boat so the cost increased.
I don't know how many boats I have to make to break even!!
