So it's down to poplar, white pine or I actually found a local source for paulownia.

One approach to the cost vs weight issue is to look at commercial boat pricing and see how much folks are willing to pay to save 10 lbs (or less) on boat weight...it's usually $1000++ difference for the lighter layups (kevlar,carbon, etc...).
