I usually pay about $80 for cedar and accents for a kayak. Not clear so there is lots of waste.
The 4x8 order would have been $500+ without accent wood. I might of decided it was worth it in aggravation if I could have looked at the lumber before it I had to purchase it.

So my piece meal smaller boards are about $1.30 per board foot.
The 4x8 would have been about $5.30 per board foot.
I can get mahogany for $5.50 per board foot locally.

When you bought your large supply what did you pay?

It was quite a few years ago when I found a small sawyer operation in Jordan River BC- now gone AFAIK. He was sawing old-growth cedar and I got some 4/4 boards, 18 to 20+ ft long. I think I paid about $2/bf for that stuff, and about $1 for other not-so-nice (but clear) boards and also for some yellow cedar. I've bought green 8/4, 8" wide planks for under $1/bf through the local woodworking guild wood recycling program, which saws logs taken mostly from residential properties.

Nowadays I go to Westwind (Sidney BC) or PJ White (Victoria) for good lumber and the prices are pretty high but the quality is good. I'm not looking forward to the end of my stash of strips, when I need to find more wood at 'real world' prices.

Finding a good small sawmill is the cheapest way to get lumber IMO, but you need to mill and dry it yourself.
For folks without a lot of equipment, S4S lumber or ready-to-go strips probably make more sense.

In BC, most of the good wood goes straight to Asia in log form.
