I'd have to agree with Howie, the stain is a very much surface condition, once you start to fair it, you'll mess up with the color.
Worth thinking about just how much darker colored heavy woods you use, can very easily end up with a very heavy kayak. Doesn't sound like much with thin strips, it's amazing at how quickly though the weight adds up. Big difference hoisting a mid thirty something pound kayak around and one that's more like seventy pounds, I've got both, the heavy one isn't fun to load.
