I don't know of any standard to which production boats are built. The builders I know did not determine their layup by making test panels and doing standardized engineering tests on the lay. This is not to say that nobody does, but there is a wide body of knowledge about what layups work that serves as a starting point. Builders vary the layup with their own ideas, build boats and paddle them hard, then modify their layup as required.

We could make sample panels of what the layups we think the manufacturers use and then compare our own panels to those. But since most layups are proprietary, beyond buy boats and sawing them up the best we can do is guess and hope.

I think strength testing of manufactured kayaks would be interesting for all kayakers, but right now the data does not exist.

: I dont. But if all of the production boats are designed to a range of values,
: than that is probably a good start. The point is, it is not sufficient to
: just say "x is stronger than y". How much stronger? And what is
: it's deflection vs failure, in a real world number? I am sure that there
: are established design values, it's just that nobody will publish them.
