: Ian, at what theoretical weight of kayak would you be willing to load it up
: with stuff and do surf landings?

I don't know, it would depend on the boat and when deciding I would not even consider the weight. Weight is a bragging point for the builder. ("It's as strong as Joe's boat but it's 15 pounds lighter!!") My Arluk III weighs almost 60 pounds and it is as safe as the kevlar version which weighs 49 pounds.

: Anywho the car analagy was a crude way of comparing like things and
: technologies, '80 honda is better made and probably safer per lb. than a
: '80 chevy suburban. But I could get more kayaks back from the take-out!

In a head on collision between a Honda and a Suburban, I would choose to be in the Suburban because the additional safety of the Honda could never overcome the weight difference but, if I had to choose between a head on involving 2 Hondas or a head on involving 2 Suburbans, I would take the Hondas.

Kayaks are like things and technologies, builders have different methods but the essence is the same. George is simply focusing on an aspect that allows him to build lighter boats with the same, or slightly higher, strength.

This doesn't make anyone else's boat dangerous, it just gives George the ability to say, "It's as strong as Nick's boat but it's 10 pounds lighter!!"

I think he pushes the "dangerously inferior" label in an attempt to market his idea. The fact that he has no data that shows that other boats are infact a hazard is the reason his ideas can't be sold.

I have no problem building a boat to Nick's specs but because of George's confrontational attitude, I look at his ideas as interesting but not worth trying. I am building a boat not an engineering marvel!!!
