Ideally we'd like data on multiple-thin-glass lay-ups to compare to the data in your book, but this data is not yet available, and we don't expect you to run a whole series of tests to obtain this information. I think you are right that 'standard' lay-ups are adequate for most people and most circumstances.

I posted a few questions last fall on what kinds of tests would we like to see on what kind of lay-ups. This generated quite a bit of discussion, but no resolution as to which test would be best -- 3-pont bending, fix one end deflect the other, etc. I may have access to a tensile-testing machine at work, and I believe it can be set up for compression testing to do a 3-point test. But to do enough test panels to get good data would require breaking quite a few so as to not have wood irregularities affect the tests. The whole idea became a bit daunting. I may look back into it, though, after the Outer Island is done. One other concern I had was that if I were to build some test panels per George's methods and test them, he would discount the results on the grounds that my application technique is inferior to his. Maybe George would be willing to build some panels and we could send them out with other builders' panels for some side-by-side testing...

I have to admit that I've found this whole discussion very fun, but I can sympathize with those who are on this bulletin board looking for basic building hints and have to get on their hip waders to find the information they're looking for. There has been so much traffic on the subject of engineering lately, that it would almost make sense to have a completely different board for it. I think this should be done on George's site, so we can duke it out on his home turf.

: Just because we discuss new options does not mean what is out there is no
: good. I like to design kayaks, but not because I though the Inuit and
: Aleut boats were bad. Just because there is discussion about glassing
: layups and techniques does not imply the current methods are insufficient.

: In my book I suggest several different glassing schedules for several
: different uses. I provide structural information based on the best
: published data. I give the advice that more glass makes a boat stronger. I
: admit this is a little vague but the advice is sound.

: I am open to suggestions on what more you would like to see. I will update my
: book in the future and I can provide more information in it, or I can add
: material to my website which covers this subject.

: Do you have specific information you would like to see?
