Many engineers, experienced or unexperienced in kayaking, would not rule out composites. You can't make a blanket statement about materials -- you have to consider how they are applied. Next time you fly in an airplane, think about all the composites in it. Floors, interior panels, and wing structures are often made of composites. Go to a bike shop -- you'll find good ol' metals like steel and aluminum, newer metals like titanium, and carbon-fiber composites. Wheels, forks, frames, pedaled by the most experienced of cyclists. The method of construction is drastically different, but both meet the same needs. A carbon-fiber bike could be well-made that would be safer than poorly-made titanium bike.
