: Paul, what do you call a "Small batch of resin"? I recently
: finished my Guillemot S&G and I used either 4 or 6 pumps of West Systems
: resin for each batch as I was wetting out the cloth. Do you consider this
: large? medium? small? Is there a general consensus on this board of how
: much makes a small or large batch?

: Anyone feel free to jump in here. I'm just curious. This being my first
: experience with epoxy, I didn't do a perfect job, but I learned a lot, and
: I'm sure my next boat will be much more beautiful for it.

This seems a perfect time to chime in here with my $0.02 worth.

My freind, Charley, and I are an our second canoe now, a 13' Rob Roy. I liked the glassing procedure described by Spidey some time ago, and decided to try it his way.

We put the glass on the boat on a bias (full layer first, then the smaller patches as described by Nick), and mixed a large batch of epoxy (Raka) and just went for it. The glass was smoothed out with a large paint brush. The glass covered the entire bottom of the boat, conforming to every curve without a snip or wrinkle anywhere.

We used 10 pumps which filled a 1 pint container almost to the top (probably 24~28 oz.). After mixing, we poured the whole thing on the boat to get it spread out as quickly as possible and prevent kicking early. The Raka epoxy behaved beautifully; wetting out the 4 oz. cloth almost on cantact, and with nary a bubble to be found anywhere. This pour covered about 80% of the boat, with a second batch of 4 pumps completing the task with nothing left over. There was no problem with working time, we were long finished before the epoxy even started to kick off.

After the cluster (expletive) that we went through on our first boat, this technique was a pleasure. Thanks Spidey.
