"I rarely see a strip kayak with properly fit B+C strips, and they have terrible fill jobs and fractured glass because the joint has no structural integrity."

To me is sounds like you are saying B&C doesn't work for many people. Am I wrong?

"I would only do B+C because the contact area for glue is twice as great, leading to a stronger joint, and giving a greater chance of some structural integrity if it's not a perfect fit all the way around the bead, because even if you only get 50% contact that's as much as is possible with a beveled strip."

This sounds to me like you are saying B&C is the best option. Am I wrong?

"rout beads and coves (separate passes) on enough strips for my first (and probably only) strip kayak"

The difference between an idea that sounds good and and how it works in practice can be great.

This idea of B&C having a larger gluing surface is based on the use of 1/4" thick strips and 1/4" B&C cutters. I agree with your observation of a great number of strippers with problems, using 1/4" B&C strips, placed with force alone. The assumption I see in most every book on strip building is you will have problems aligning strips which will mean you have to do some heavy shaping with something like a plane. So in that case you must use a thicker strip to have enough wood left. But the 1/4" thickness of the strip causes alignment problems in the first place.

The extensive experience I have building strippers gives me a perspective to see where time and effort are wasted and where energy is best focused. I use that experience to clear the fog of swirling conflicting ideas for my builders and anyone else willing to listen.

I advocate the use of 3/16" thick strips which are much easier to shape with a heat gun and place without force. This makes stripping easy, results in a fair hull from the start, with less work in every following step, period.

I've been advocating the use of 3/16" beveled strips placed without force using the heat gun on this BB for many years.

Ask a few builders on this BB what they think about it verses 1/4" B&C strips.
