I am glad I started asking questions. The more I read and learn, the more I realize I don't know. Every comment is much appreciated. Today I went and looked at kayaks at a specialty store, and suffered severe sticker shock. I realize they are (probably) nicer boats than at Dicks Sporting Goods, but was still a bit surprised.

I did talk to a very knowledgeable young woman there who got me re-thinking what type of kayak I should build. We do live in Michigan after all, and the Great Lakes on a nice day would be beautiful, but a longer kayak might be in order. So much to juggle and consider. I fear I'll end up like I am with guitar --- one for every occasion.
