Dude- I rarely see a strip kayak with properly fit B+C strips, and they have terrible fill jobs and fractured glass because the joint has no structural integrity. How do you think these people would fare fitting beveled strips? Even proper builders complain that "if you have a dark colored kayak the glue will melt and bubble at the joints," which is complete nonsense- I showed photos of this phenomenon that I collected from the forum to the engineers at West and they said that the issue was a poor glue joint giving no structural integrity and the glass fracturing under the load. Some like to pretend that the core doesn't matter and all the strength comes from the glass, but while that is somewhat true it ignores the reality that the core must have some sort of structural integrity.

I do not doubt that for someone experienced with hand tools and boatbuilding experience beveled strips are good, but in many cases when this advice is doled out, it is potentially going to someone who can't even properly sharpen and set up a block plane. I think you should give them a fighting chance unless they plan to paint the finished product an opaque color, and if they're going to do that, just build it Björn's way with square edges. As an experienced woodworker with a fair amount of boatbuilding experience, I would only do B+C because the contact area for glue is twice as great, leading to a stronger joint, and giving a greater chance of some structural integrity if it's not a perfect fit all the way around the bead, because even if you only get 50% contact that's as much as is possible with a beveled strip. If you want to just put together an object that isn't used much and you don't mind fractured glass and terrible glue lines... which are the norm rather than the exception from what I've seen with B+C building around here, it's a great option, but one that will not produce a great end product (unless painted).

End rant.
