Rob,

Yes, thanks for the advice. Since it is still cool in my garage, I haven't glassed the hull. Do you still think tacking the forms in place will work ok?

Also, I've had varying success with hot melt holding, mostly due to my attention to properly bending the strips. I resorted to brads in a few cases. This seemed to work pretty well.

Phil

I'm assuming you mean, "Can I tack the stations in the hull and strip the deck?" The answer is yes.

You are probably better off leaving the hull un-glassed since the wood will be subject to changes in moisture in your shop. We can run into problems when the exterior hull surface is glassed and the interior is not. The bare wood surface will expand and contract with ambient moisture. In the winter moisture levels are lower. The bare wood contracts while the hull exterior is fixed with epoxy and the hull curls inward like a pea pod when stations are removed.

To remedy this, moisture must be reintroduced over and over again with a wet sponge until the hull spreads back to the width it was when the exterior was glassed. It took a long time to dry and it might take a long time to restore the original moisture content. Excessively damp weather will lead to the opposite condition. The hull will spread wide and must be dried. If the deviation from the stations is just a couple inches, force can be used to reshape the hull or deck. More than a couple inches and force could cause damage. These are great lessons in the expansion and contraction of wood interacting with moisture, but you may not want to learn these first hand.

Small amounts of hot glue hold better because the glue cools/sets faster. If force is needed to hold a strip in place, clamps must be used to allow the hot glue to set fully before it will achieve maximum holding power. If you learn to use a heat gun to twist and bend strips, so they can be placed without force the hot glue will work even better.

Rob
