A ROS works great, I've got several and use the often, but it covers too small of an area to work to fair long thin objects (like boat hulls and decks) to get a perfect final surface.

I would agree with you if you use a ROS the way most people sand.

I assume a stripped hull will have saw marks on the strip surfaces and VERY small irregularities along the glue joints. This surface acts as a register for assessing sanding progress. People get frustrated with sanders when they try to level a surface like a stripper hull and don't see immediate results. So, they press harder and harder on the sander, or use an edge of the sanding disk to remove low spots like an eraser. This natural when trying to level a surface using too fine a grit.

And guys can't resist buying the biggest and baddest sander available. Actually a small, light-weight ROS is ideal for kayaks.

It's common to believe sanding takes no thought, or instruction. Like every tool and technique you can simply do what the next guy does, and follow the the lemmings over the cliff, or you can do a little research and learn how to make magic with a seeming simple tool.

For details on how to sand go to my "Shop Tips " and scroll down to the heading "Learn How to Sand" @ http://www.laughingloon.com/shop.tips.html

It is actually possible to sand to a surface, nearly as fair, as with a long board, using a ROS, IF:

1; You've stripped a fair surface to start.

2; You use 60 or 40 grit paper to level the surface quickly. Seems scary but, think "Bed of Nails" trick.

3; You hold a light-weight small ROS lightly and loosely against the wood surfaces and allow the fair surface to guide the sanding disk. Sand away from your body, closely watching the surface change from irregular to a uniform matt surface.

Most people learn if you start the ROS before pressing it against the wood it spins very fast and cuts very aggressively as it touches the wood. So, instead of pressing hard, if you press lightly and even lift off the wood occasionally the ROS will cut faster and follow the surface keeping it fair. Picture yourself holding the sanding disk flat and sand in small circles rotating your wrist to allow the disk to follow the curves. Imagine the disk cutting a dip in the surface if you press an edge of the disk down.

So, yes, if you have a tool with a small cutting surface relative to a long board, you will make a rippled surface if you press hard, eraser sand, and use a heavy, high powered sander with 80 grit. This is exactly why long boards are needed in the first place.

You can always tune the surface to your liking with the long board as a last step.

Best of all, you will have less work, less sanding.

It works for me
