My first experience kayaking was at the Apostle Islands in Lake Superior. My brother and I had never been in kayaks and didn't know anything about how to prepare. We set off on 3-mile crossing during 25-knot winds and a small craft advisory (a park ranger actually pointed the way to our first campsite and told us we'd have no problem.) We had one bilge pump between the two of us, and that consisted of our entire saftey gear supply. I had never done a wet exit until a 5' wave broadsided me and knocked me over. Luckily this was near the island. I got knocked over twice, my brother once, and we drifted ashore and camped in the rough.
