Are you using the paddle shaft to help get you up onto the deck? If so, that's your problem.

The way that I teach the paddle float rescue is to bring your body up so that you're floating on the surface, like you're snorkeling. Then kick and swim while pulling yourself onto the deck. After you're on the deck, you put your foot over the paddle shaft near the paddle's throat. The shaft never supports your weight, because most of your weight is on the kayak's rear deck.
