It's all about technique. The single most common mistake paddlers make when learning paddle float rescues is trying to come out of the water vertically. It doesn't work and it puts tremendous strain on the paddle. The proper technique is to first kick your feet to the surface so that you're floating horizontal in the water. Then, you kick and pull yourself up and across the aft deck. You're not lifting your entire body weight and you're only lifting your torso a few inches to get it up onto the deck; the main movement is horizontal, not vertical. This puts relatively little stress on the paddle and deck rigging.
