The paddle shaft and paddle float act to stabilize the kayak not to support your weight. Your weight should be supported by the boat.

For years I practiced with a paddle float and then one day I tried to use just the paddle. It worked. Soon after that I began practicing the same entry process without the paddle. You need to get your body over the back deck to support yourself and then pivot around while maintaining an even distribution of weight on the boat. Starting at the stern of the boat allows you to get the middle of torso on top of the boat. Then move up the boat sideways to get to the cockpit.

Naturally some kayaks are easier. But a lot of it has to do with practicing balance.
