It's one more piece of gear that must be stored until used, deployed during the rescue and most importantly, retrieved and stowed after the rescue. Since you'll still be in the same conditions that caused the capsize in the first place, having to deal with retrieving and stowing gear could easily result in you ending up back in the water again

Hi Brian,
I agree with that mentality.I think every time I carry my boat to and from the water if I will need my spare paddle, found in the mangroves,my home made builge pump and gel lead acid battery,my extra set of clothes,my emergency shelter [Tarpaulin] and the spare can of strong drink. They all have there place in a low volume cockpit but...my bare boat is now 25 kg,up from 20!
Lee shore can be thousands of miles away.My sea anchor, still stowed below ,is occasionally clipped on to a loop in my perimeter deck line which I can shuffle through the bow and stern holes,or let it fall out ,when I do, and find it's own place as I swim after it. Retrieval is the reverse, when fishing. When desperate needs I would, as carefully as I could, use my sailor's knife, clipped to my PFD and cut it free. The line is 3 mm[1/8th] thick.
cheers, from Paul
