: Does anyone have any information on home built stuff and insurance?

A lesson here for all of us. Drag out that tenant's or home owner's policy and give it a good read. Over on the blowboat forum insurance has come up. West Marine and BoatUS both write policies and have good service reputations. BoatUS and you can come to an agreement on the value of your boat. May want you to go through the Coast Guard drill though.

Several eons ago I had a shop broken into and a 911 Porsche engine I was breaking down was stolen. My insurance company explained to me that the unregistered Porsche was excluded as "a land use vehicle which if used on the public highways must be registered." I then pointed out to the adjuster that automobile parts weren't excluded. The company bought me a used engine and paid to have it rebuilt. This on a car I paid $700 for at salvage. So read that policy carefully. Generally, items of personal property not excluded are included. Of course, Bill's kayak was priceless.
