In Response To: Stupid Mistake (Bill Sivori)

I am always sorry to hear about some one who gets burned by some low-life. It made me wonder about something again, though. Has anybody registered with the USCG and obtained a manufacturuers ID? I saw a short article in "Messing About in Boats" which said you could register with the Coast Guard as a manufacturer and get a 3 digit ID nbr which is used as the first three nbrs of a hull nbr (seial nbr) The article was aimed at saving a few bucks on materials (buy wholesale) and better resale values but I was thinking that the Coast Guard would have a record of your boat, they're everywhere, and it would be build by a recognized manufacturer so maybe could be insured for it's actual value. I'm worried about hidden liabilites as a registered builder, though, and prefer not to get involved with the authorities in most matters, don't feel the need to ligitimize this addiction.
