In Response To: adjustable foot braces (Fred Williams)

: I'm seeking opinons on different brands of adjustable foot pegs (not for
: rudder application). The two of which I'm aware are the Yakima (with
: aluminum rails) and Keepers (all plastic, sold by Perception, I think).
: Are either of these particularly good? or particularly bad? Are there
: other makes, and if so, where would I find them? Thanks in advance.

I have Keepers in my Arctic Tern, and I just ordered Yakima for my Outer Island. The person at Great River Outfitters that I talked to said that eventually all Keepers will break and need to be replaced. I don't buy it necessarily, but thought I'd try Yakima so I knew how both faired. If you paddle bare-footed, I think the Keepers are better because they're smoother. Keepers are also supposed to work better if you get sand in them -- supposedly the Yakima are more likely to clog. If you plan on shortening your rails, Yakima are the easiest to modify. Really, though, I think their merits are about equal.
