Back yard boat building really hit it's peak in the 50's and 60's. It fell off considerably in the 60's thru the 80's but has been gradually picking up since then.

Still there are a huge number of used fiberglass boats on the market and it's a heck of a lot cheaper to rebuild one than it is to build one from scratch, so for larger boats that's taken it's toll. For anything over say 20' it's a HUGE project that most people will never complete, the places offering plans never really get the point across just how many hours a big boat project takes. Several thousand hours for most big boats.
