Unsure of recent trends in numbers of builders but it seems steady to me for the last 18 years.
Bill you are right on about time commitments for larger boats. For me the smaller the boat the more fun. Just load up several for the family beach days.
I emphasize how easy it is to build if you have a semi proper space and an hour or two a few nights a week. Add in some weekend time and you can spread 80 hours for a SNG over a winter very easily. Ditto strip just more hours.
After 18 years I am at about 20 builds from plans. All different kayaks
