It's 17 foot, for highway speeds you'll need bow and stern lines to be safe. The straps holding it to the cradles only need to be snug, there is no reason to tighten them to the point you'd risk crushing the boat. I don't like ratchet straps for that reason and the buckles tend to bang around causing wear on both the boat and car.

What you use for a rack is up to you, I use Yakima racks, always have, work great but aren't cheap. Foam blocks are not for highway travel btw.
