At one point, CLC was recommending using Yakima or Thule bars, 'padded' (I use the dense foam tubes used for insulating hot water pipes), with the kayak strapped down snuggly. A few have noted the ratchet type can be damaging - there's not enough play between too loose and crush. The straps with the buckle (can't recall the name) work better, IMO. Bow line, however you do it. Tail flag if you've got overhang!

There used to be a poster here (Bryan?) who had a website on his kayak builds, as well as 'how to make your own cradles'. If you can make a boat, a cradle is a snap. Has the advantage of really locking the boat in. Maybe someone will recall the site.
