I ended up doing the same thing except I took a wet wash cloth and placed it over the strips and applied a hot clothes iron instead of a heat gun, making steam. That allowed me to use clamping pressure to bend the forward strips which had already been glued in place, down. For the ver lateral most strip I found there is significant twist and for that I used a makeshift steam box, built from a 2 foot section of PVC pipe, connected to a steam generator. I just twisted the strip manually (wearing leather gloves) and that seemed to work.
