Funny,

I just dealt with the same problem 2 weeks ago on my first kayak build. I sweat the issue a lot and had to do a couple of things. First off, I heated the forward strips which I left long with a heat gun while applying pressure to the wood to force it to bend down. I was afraid this might not work; but, it worked well. The glue burnt a bit. The other thing I did was to layout the cutout temporarily so I didn't need to worry about the flat area since it was being cut out any way. I was suprised at how easy it was after I did these two things.
