If you can get quality birch plywood, use it, but it is not necessary. Most SOF builders use regular, decent quality plywood, not even the marine grade. Just pick something that looks strong, with as few void holes as possible. Almost any plywood has some void holes, it's a matter of how many. If you coat it with epoxy (at least the edges), your boat's frame will be as good and strong as any. To make a specific cross section stronger you can either make its walls larger (smaller hole), or use epoxy to glue 2 frames together so you will get the thickness x2. IMHO, in Yost-style SOF the stringers are the weakest points when your boat gets hit sideways, and making sure they are strong will benefit your boat most.
