Bob,

The float bags are air filled, they contour around the frames fairly well, use a sea sock to reduce water loading in the yak. I have not seen an sof with built in bulkheads, but someone may have done it before.

Knots are just part of the equation for board strength. there are some small
+-1/4" knots in the stringers I used with no change in the bend rate of the stringer. large sections of uneven grain around a large knot are what you are trying to avoid

All the stringers you saw were pine, lasting just fine for me.

The wood version is strong, very strong. If your comfortable working with aluminium then sure go for that.

Coat the cross sections with epoxy if you wish, just scuff sand after to make sure they are smooth (don't ask how I know).
