I'll jump on the kid SOF bandwagon.
It's quick, easy, cheap. And I think the SOF frame construction lends itself more to getting the kid involved in the job if you or he are interested. Last year when my son was 10 he did 1/3 - 1/2 of the work building a Sea Pup.
