Sorry to burst the wonderful "Nanook" bubble, but that scene with the family and dog coming out of the kayak is what is known as a "trick-of-the-camera" --a fine insight towards Flaherty's skill and/or sense of humor. This is confirmed by a friend who interviewed several people present during filming. Note the cuts during the sequence.

: Nanook of the North (can be found on YouTube if anyone is interested in
: watching it) depicts an eastern Canadian kayak (Baffin or Labrador, IIRC)
: not Greenland. The scene where Nanook pulls several people out from inside
: the kayak was staged; the entire film has been criticized for its
: inaccurate portrayal of Inuit life.

The film does have its critics, but while it romanticizes such a life, it does depict it with some 'ethnographic' accuracy. . . . aside from the family in the kayak ;-)
