Good points - though I might suggest the environments and uses were/are not all that similar - except maybe in a general sense as viewed from a "modern" temperate zone recreational (vs subsistence) kayaker's perspective - which most of us reading this share.

I've been on a ship off the Aleutians (in January) doing Amphibious landings. Up close and personal it's a pretty unique area - and not really much like the pictures and stories of Greenland I've seen at all - particularly the sea states (which it was my job to record at the time as part of the hourly weather observations).

Aleutian Baidarka paddlers did not deal with sea ice pack (I also used to do the sea ice forecasts for the Bering Sea at another duty station a while back too), paddled in very different sea states from East OR West coast Greenland Inuit (when does Greenland ever see large long period swells anything close to N Pacific in Winter?), had different shore compositions, often went longer distances, generally hunted a different mix of game with quite different behavior in different environs/conditions, and they did often store things (like said game) internally.

More than enough variation in use to to account for the design differences.

But what do I know - I paddle a Greenland looking SOF with somewhat shortened overhangs and rather Baidarka like dimensions/cross-sections/handling characteristics made to suit how I like to paddle in S FL conditions!
