There are more good reasons for those pointy stem shapes, one of which is related to maneuverability and speed. In low speeds the waterline length is short, making the boat very maneuverable. Speeding up, the bow and stern waves climbs the stems effectively lenghtening the waterline, increasing the hull speed and the directional stability. So in essence you get a craft that is very manoeveable in low speeds where that may be needed, but will get a higher top speed the faster you paddle.
