another reason NOT to bolt-through

I had my Outer Island (with bolted-through-the-hull footbraces) at a symposium when another kayaker made a good point:

The exposed screwheads scratch up other people's boats when you're rafting up or doing rescues.

(and this advice wasn't even from a paddler of a nice wood kayak -- he paddles a fiberglass kayak)
