In Response To: Footbraces and Bulkhead questions (Steve)

: I have a couple questions regading the installation of the footbraces and
: bulkhead installations.

: When is the best time to install, before the deck is in place or after? I am
: using wood stripped panels for the bulkheads.

Before placing the deck for a S&G with sheer clamps, after placing the deck for S&G's and strippers with taped shear seams.

: I am also thinking of mounting the footbraces inside and would like some
: ideas on how to approach this rather than drilling through the hull.

Search on drill and footbraces in the archives. You want to epoxy a rail of wood inside the boat with T-nuts on the backside to bolt into.

:I am
: using the 13" Yakima footbraces. Should these be done before or after
: the deck in put on and what's the best way to determine their location?

Either will work well. Figure out where the cockpit will be located, and assume that your back will be 4-6" in front of the back of the coaming. Then find where your feet stop in the hull. If you're taller than some of the folks who will be paddling your boat, set the footrests so most of the adjustment is shorter. If you're short, but have tall friends or relatives, set the footbraces to be able to have most of the adjustment longer.

If you're tall, like me, and greedy, like me, and don't plan to have many other people paddle your boat, glass in your woodstrip bulkhead and use it as a footrest. Mine is angled about 10* forward for comfort. If anything, mount it too far away, and you can always shim it back with a layer or two of 1" minicell. If it's too short, then you're screwed!! (I could always add footbraces to mine, since I'm taller than anyone else who will paddle my boat, and I can then just slide my feet past the footbraces to use my bulkhead)
