: Looking for some input on the hull layup. Last year I built the Guillemot, I
: liked it so much that I'm presently building a stretched guillemot, taking
: it to 19 feet. LAst year I used the standard layup. I found it very time
: consuming to fair out the edge of the second layer of glass on the hull as
: well as the seam tape on the outside. I'm about a week from starting the
: glassing process, tonight as i finishe the deck, A novel idea struck me.
: perhaps that is all it is. proceed in the following sequence, glass the
: outer hull and deck, next glass the inner hull and deck. Apply the inner
: seam tape, both layers, this will be a mechanical bond. Apply the first
: layer of outer seam tape, again a mechanical bond. Now apply the second
: layer of glass on the hull and bring that 1 1/2" to 2" past the
: sheerline. Next, fair out a single edge on each side, major epoxy work
: done. However, the second layer is only a mechanical bond. What do all you
: guys/gals think? mechanical vs chemical bond.

Hey you say you don't want to bother with fairing out tape... y would you? you need to cut the salvage edge off any cloth or tape and pull off a dfew strands of glass so you have about a half inch of weft direction strands on both sides. it makes the edges much smoother and makes the cloth opver all a bit stronger. because then there aren't any loops in it.

A good layup that comes to mind would be... one VERY light "say 2.5 oz" layer on the outside of hull and deck. and all the glass you want on the inside. then tape the boat together... then put any reinforcing layers of glass in then put a layer of 4 or 6 oz over the whole smash. overlapping by 2 inches at the seams or you could try cutting it like a butt joint where the glass comes together at a single line and doesn't over lap at all... but that could be tricky.

For what it's worth
