: A good friend just bought a 30' sailboat. I mentioned the coin under the mast
: to him, and he said that it was highly discouraged, since some folks were
: concerned about galvanic corrosion between the coin and the aluminum mast.

Some countries use aluminum for their lower denomination coins, and Missouri used to have plastic "mills" worth 1/10th of a cent, which were used for paying trivial amounts of taxes. They ahve not been used fo some time but a coinc specialty shop should probably have some at a low price. These should certainly avoid galvanic problems with aluminum masts.

How cheap can we go here? Any idea what the going rate is for cossing the Styx? Does the boatman give discounts to boat builders as a professional courtesy? Any discounts if you arrive in your own boat? Or will they let you bypass the boatman and cross on your own in that case?

: Reason #573 to build and go to sea in wooden boats.

And then of course, if you build wodden boats you are certain to have some plastic resin around. Dipping a coin in either polyester or epoxy resin would effectively encapsulate it and prevent galvanic action. Maybe dip it a couple of times for a nice thick coating of plastic, or just drop it into the bottom of your mixing bucket when you finish applying some resin. The bucket will serve as a nice mold and the lump of hardened resin that you pop out of it will have a deeply embedded coin. You can trim off the excess resin, of course.

Hope this helps.
