All I can say is Thanks to Julie for bringing the topic up. The reason, well well the scout troop and leaders have spent a lot of time and manpower to bring about these colaspeable kayaks. The idea of a launch ceremony is going to turn into a potluck picnic with activites.

I recommended to the group can have a blessing from the bishop of the ward and then bludgeon the kayaks balloons filled with cheap lemon-lime soda pop, which will then be followed with a roar of cheers of men and boys rushing feverishly into the choppy waves of the vast silver lake expanse (it's actually a small lake) with their curiously built craft.

Now it would be cool to use water from the great salt lake mostly as a symbolic gesture than anything else. I could go for water from the holy land too.

In any case, having a launching ceremony creates a great excuse to have fun. G

: Gene,

: Pardon my ignorance on these matters, but are there any bodies of water that
: would be appropriate sources for a more symbolic fluid than grape juice?

: I've seen bottles of water from the Jordan river, and the Dead Sea, which
: might be appropriate for fresh, or salt water launchings in some
: communities. Would water from the Holy Land, or from the Great Salt Lake
: be more meaningful than juice if you were to have a launching with a
: religious base?

: If you go with juice, there are several varieties of sparkling apple juice
: (not fermented, no alcohol, just carbonated) that are sold near me -- and
: probably available throughout the country. These are bottles like
: champagne and have a plastic 'cork' that flies out with a nice
: "pop" sound. Apple juice doesn't stain as badly as grape.

: Have fun with the launchings -- however you do them.
