Manufactured tape will have a ridge on the edge. It's not a big deal taping inside seams. You could cut your own tape and you could use shorter pieces without any strength loss. But you would also have yards and yards of fraying edges as you wet out the tape. I'm not sure that it wouldn't be more objectionable to have little clumps of glass fiber from the frayed edges than to have the ridges from the manufactured tape.
