I'm in the middle of building a S&G kayak from scratch - The only tools I've used are a: jig saw, block plane, surform rasp, pliers, screwdriver, and wire cutter. You'll also need brushes, mixing cups, etc. for the epoxy. Pretty basic. If price is an issue, consider trying Nicks S&G design. The plans are free on his site - if you get stuck, the regulars on this board jump at the opportunitiy to help new builders. My brother and I are building two for about $250 each.

Don't think you won't have issues and problems, but you will be able to work through them.

DO IT - just don't expect to quit slobbering - in fact, you may slobber more after you get one done and start thinking of all the ways you could do it better.
