I built a Cape Charles about a year ago and recently started thinking on how to build one with a strip deck. Several years ago I took Ted Moores class on Fine Strip Kayak building. In that class we built a 17 ft kayak that used a shear clamp to attach the deck and hull. The deck was glued to the shear clamp and the hull was screwed to the shear clamp during building. After all the building and finishing the final step was to glue the deck and hull together at the sheer clamp using the screws as keys for alignment and to supply clamping pressure. I think tis technique would work for the Cape Charles. Build the stitch and glue hull screwing the shear clamp to the plywood with small panhead self tapping screws. After glassing the hull put in forms and build the strip deck glueing the deck to the sheer clamp . Fair and glass the top of the deck. Remove the pan head screws and lift out the deck and fair and glass the inside of the deck. Glue the sheer clamp to the hull using bronze or stainless flathead screws to be the keys for alignment and provide clamping pressure. Cover the screw heads with th rubrail. I think this method will work but I haven't tried it.
