Well, today I started cutting wood for my first boat. I cut two sheets of plywood at one time, stacking them offset by 1 1/4". I had sharpened my plane, so it cut well. I set the blade really shallow. Anyway, it took me a couple of hours to cut, because I really went slow. I did get some tearing over one short section of the edge, it gave me a little trouble from the start, I'm not sure why, but it wasn't that tough. I have never done any woodwork before, but I honestly didn't find it that hard, I just tried to keep the plies as even as I could for the whole time. I also clamped the sheets tightly together. Anyway, I would say, don't worry about cutting the scarfs, they aren't bad at all. Take your time. I got a really good fit . Good luck.
