Like you the first scarf joints scared me as well, especially as I have not been very good at using a block plane.Using a belt sander makes this job incredably easy, I suggest practising on a few scrap bits first but you will be suprised on how easy it really is. Be a bit careful on clamping the joint when drying, too much pressure will starve the joint of epoxy.
