We seem to have gone from skinny kayaks to rudders. There are arguments against them, but we do need to get the "facts" right.

The bit of rudder sticking out aft is in the high impact zone and protects the hull from damage. When stowed, I use the blade retaining part as a lifting handle, nicely rounded and comfortable to the hand and as far aft as possible. What it means is I build strong rudders with strong attachment points.

Blade in the water - possibly the worst were Prijon (Seayak etc.) rudders, placed on a plastic projection to get them as far from the water as possible. This meant only the tip of the blade got wet. Only a hand width of my blade is out of the water and in the blade holder. Paul Caffyn (circumnavigated a lot of places) was always on about long blades so they stayed in the water what ever the wave shape. Don Currie in NZ tried a few side mounted and further forward to keep them in the water at all times plus designed what is now called the Skudder.

The Australians had previously done similar research.

Nick - "...not the ideal solution for all people in all situations. It depends on the type of paddling you like to do..." Yes, that is probably, or should be, the main criteria.
