Vaclav suggests 4mm ply for the hull and 3mm on the deck, and 6oz E-Glass on the hull and 4oz on the deck, but my inclination would be to go 3mm ply top and bottom, and 4oz S-Glass all over, especially for the smaller boat. It would make for a nice light weight boat for the lady, who, although she seems sporty, tough and strong, is still going to be lacking in the brute strength department, and it would be nice for her to be able to lug the thing down to the water in one hand like everyone else.
They talk about glass all over it and 4 mm ply. If you want light weight use 3 mm ply and glass only on the chine, keel and deck-side join, about 2" wide or narrower strip of cloth, cut on the diagonal as a strip. As I mentioned my 5 m long by 510 mm beam kayak was 13 kg into the water before fitting out with rudder pedals, rudder, neoprene deck hatch covers, etc. so it is possible to build light yet strong.

What about hitting rocks? I always hit rocks. If the kayak was a fibreglass one I certainly wouldn't treat it the same way, no rock-gardening. But with wood and 3 mm it is quite strong enough to poke into anywhere reasonable. Admittedly there are places where only a plastic hull should go (and stay there?).

The Cirrus STL seems to be a short fat version. Length is speed. Of the 5 metres I'm talking about, there is only a short bow overhang and no stern overhang so most of that length is waterline.
