Hi Alex. I would agree that some kayaks need a rudder, specifically, the fast downwind style boats like some of the Epics or the Rockpool Taran, which have their design genesis in the Surfski, for most other kayaks, including many doubles, I would rather fit a skeg, if anything at all. While the skeg can actually aid one onto a desired off wind course, it is really for holding a desired course.

For me, the beauty of the skeg is that when I don't want it, which is most of the time, it is completely out of sight and out of mind. Also, the rigging is minimal, and uncomplicated. for some of my boats the overhangs would not be ideal for a rudder either.

Apart from my straight line racer, all of my boats, even the eighteen and nineteen footers, will manoeuvre just fine with the right amount of tilt combined with the application of some paddle. Some are more agile than others but, overall, I would not be tempted to put a rudder in any of them.

Initially the boats that we are looking at for this project will be used primarily for cruising and pottering, but the seas around here are rarely calm, and they need to be versatile enough to handle choppy waters or the will not be able to get out much.

Et.
