I think where extra relative length can come in handy is downwind in following seas where the power of the water can help the paddler bring the hull up to its full speed potential. On a long downwind leg I think the shorter boat is going to fall behind, but in general use I feel a smaller, shorter person, is better off in the shorter boat, ptovided that it is not too wide.

The chances are that they wii be using a shorter paddle. Their shorter arms, legs and paddle are allowing them less leverage for general boat handling in turning, controlling direction and powering up to cruising speed.

I am big, so all my boats are on the big side. I like my big long boats. I can race ahead and set myself up for taking photos of the rest of the pack as they follow and I can really move downwind when I am not waiting around for slower boats, but I am beefy enough to get them moving in the stop-start of general cruising company. I often put small people into them, because they are all I have, but they really are rattling around inside them.

One of the main disadvantages for short people is the height of the fore deck on a larger boat. For this reason I am concious of deck height in the choice of these two boats, especially since the bloke really took to the GP.

The smaller Cirrusses may not be much narrower, but they are not getting wider, as some do in order to maintain a useful volume and stability for average sized folk. For beginners I don't want to go too narrow. I am not wedded to the Cirrus. We are still very much pondering options, but certainly, the conversation here has been excellent for getting us focussed on the practical aspects of the choice. There are some lovely exotic looking shapes out there, and the heart wants, but perhaps not as a primary or only boat, especially starting out.

Thanks for the input guys. I wish there were more women in the group. It would be great to benefit from their experience.
