Does anyone here have experience of Nick's suggested solution for jamming skegs - putting them an inch or so to one side of the centreline? It certainly seems logical, and I have indeed done this on my last boat, but I haven't paddled it from any sandy beaches yet, so I don't know if it works?

It seems to me that might work if the hull was deeply 'Veed' where the skeg was located. Avoiding dragging the skeg box along the beach is another good technique- not always possible especially when launching into surf.

What has worked with my Frej skeel (located right aft of the cockpit -where the hull is fairly 'flat') is to have minimal clearance (0.020" ?) on each side between the skeg blade and the housing- another great suggestion from Reg Lake. (Thanks, reg!). I used tape and mylar sheet on each side of the blade when assembling and installing the skeg box to keep the right clearance.
Sand (not that common where I paddle on Vancouver Island) is not such a problem for jamming skegs as fine gravel and small stones and bits of shell. The skegs on factory boats with a blade rattling around in an over-wide housing are an invitation to jamming - the gaps are 'just right' for stones to work their way in.
