I am actually a fan of old used tools. I have bought nearly all of my planes at antiques stores. They were the workhorse tools for ages and ages, and everybody had them, so it's not like they're hard to find. I have bedrock and baileys, I have a Miller's Falls block plane that's pretty sweet but has a unique adjustment feature that will eventually have a long-term drawback, and I passed up a deal on a Sweetheart #1 smoother and I have been very sad since. I was planning to buy it, but the guy wanted cash and I didn't have any or time to get some right that second, and a week later it was gone.

Anyway- a really nice Stanley 110 block plane goes for around $10. You can hot rod it all you want as long as the cast parts are in pretty good shape. White vinegar is awesome at rust removal from cast parts.
